About me

Welcome to my site! My name is Maggie Speak and I’m a family history researcher. I’ve been researching for more than 10 years and my journey has taken me to all corners of the world. Along the way, I’ve learned so much about my ancestor’s and other people’s lives, sometimes good, sometimes shocking, but always enlightening.

More importantly, I’ve been able to help others unlock some of their own ancestral mysteries. Whether it’s finding a single record, a long lost relative, the disappearance of a whole family or even major projects like tracing direct lineage as far back as records go, it’s always been rewarding!

I have recently expanded my knowledge by completing the Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies run by the National Institute for Genealogical Studies, Toronto University. The expert tuition has enlightened me to even more avenues to explore when searching for that elusive relative! I have gained my advanced certificate in Australian genealogy, with elective courses in UK, New Zealand, South African and Canadian records. I particularly enjoy trying to decipher and transcribe old handwriting and designing family tree charts.

I’m a member of the Western Australian Genealogical Society (Family History WA), Genealogy SA (South Australia), a Friend of the Battye Library, a member of the Royal Western Australian History Society and I volunteer as a transcriber for various genealogical organisations. I am also listed as a research agent in WA on the National Australian Archives website https://www.naa.gov.au/help-your-research/research-agents I’m constantly learning and value the very high standards of professionalism set out by internationally recognised genealogical associations. I strive to maintain those standards.
